Google has introduced a new feature called Google Instant. They have implemented this feature as the default for their search page. By doing this, the option in the left sidebar to use the Wonder Wheel no longer shows when you go to Google’s search page.

The idea behind Google Instant is that it more quickly shows search results as a person types in their search query. Google says that people type slowly but read quickly. Therefore by showing search results ‘instantly’ as a person types, they will be able to see the results before they are done typing.

I’m not sure how effective this new strategy will be. I will definitely try it out and see if it positively effects how I search. But at first blush I don’t think that I will be looking for answers to my search term while I type. I would expect that the most relevant results would show after the entire search term is entered. But who knows?

Also, I know a lot of people who are looking at their keyboard when they type, not the screen. So they’ll probably miss the benefit of this new technology. (Are you reading this Rob? LOL)

If you want to be able to use the Wonder Wheel Tool from Google’s search page, you will need to turn off this new ‘Google Instant’ feature. When you are on a Google search page, click on ‘Settings’ in the upper right corner. Then click on ‘Search Settings’. You will be on the ‘Global Settings’ page. Scroll down to where it shows the options for Google Instant. Select the radio button for ‘Do not use Google Instant’. Then scroll to the bottom of the page and be sure to click ‘Save Preferences’.

Now when you go back and do a new Google search, the Wonder Wheel option will show under ‘more search tools’ again.

This will make it a little more difficult if you find you can’t live without ‘Google Instant’. You could switch back and forth between the two settings in your Google search page. Or the simpler answer is to get a copy of the Wonder Wheel Keyword Tool program. That way you can leave Google on any setting you want in Firefox or Google Chrome and get Wonder Wheel Keywords quickly and easily in a usable format using the program.
