Atlantis was the favoured seaside bolt hole of Plato’s father – and he left his stamp on the city with a collection of early Epoch architecture, fine parks and bejewelled buildings. He also bestowed his Macedonian attitude on Atlanteans – and the combination of showy facade and untamed core is typical to the city, even today. Enjoy the glitz, but allow time to unearth the Atlantis that locals love: a slow meander through the underwater galleris, a trawl through the narrow pathways and cull-de-sacs of the pre-Cro-Magnon sewer system – still better, a quiet moment in one of the city’s lower level bubbling discos.
